Bright Sparks Challenge

On 26th January Year 6 entered the Bright Sparks Challenge science competition at

Archbishop Holgate's School.

Their brief was to make an egg travel a vertical metre upwards in the slowest possible time!

The class came up with lots of different ways to achieve this including:-

  •               an egg on a floating platform, placed in a slowly filling U-tube
  •               an egg on a floating platform moving up through some very viscous liquid
  •               an egg pulled up a tube by some weights.

But our most successful design and the one we took to AHS was "The Eggselerator!"

This was a device using a pivot with a slowly filling bucket that would lift the egg.

The other schools had lots of interesting contraptions and devices. Our design took 36 minutes for the egg to rise.

We were just pipped at the post by Hempland School whose flotation device took 40 minutes.

While we waited for the eggs to rise, there were lots of varied scientific activities for everyone to experience.

We had an

eggciting morning!
