Year 5 pupils had the opportunity to work with experts from the University of York Department of Archaeology on their latest exploratory excavations on the site of the campus expansion at Heslington East. This gave the children a fascinating insight into how we find out about the lives of people who lived here in times gone by.

They all enjoyed the experience very much.

They were shown how

to map the area.

This was the site of a kiln that

had been discovered.

The soil had to be scraped away careful when looking for hidden artifacts.

They were shown how the pottery jars

were made in times gone by and had

a go at making their own.

This is a reconstruction of a kiln that the children worked on. They are making it water and fire tight, ready to fire the

pots they made.
